New service at HSMA hospital supports patients by identifying the genetic risks of developing breast cancers and providing the necessary counselling

King Edward VII’s Hospital has added genetics testing to its offering. The new service supports patients by identifying the genetic risks of developing breast cancers.

A DNA test, used to identify genetic mutations such as BRCA, which can increase a person’s lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, can deliver peace of mind or enable patients to make informed decisions about their future lifestyle and healthcare.

The facility provides counselling before the testing. Once the tests have been completed, further counselling is offered to help patients manage the impact of the results. The genetics team offers practical support throughout the process to help individuals plan for any required follow-up treatment.

The world-leading service is being spearheaded by adult and breast cancer genetics specialist Dr Anjana Kulkarni; Professor Marc Tischkowitz, chair of the UK Cancer Genetics Group; and Dr Vishakha Tripathi, genetic counsellor and current chair of the Genetic Counsellor Registration Board (GCRB).

Dr Kulkarni said: “Genetics are increasingly becoming an essential element of cancer treatment. With greater understanding of genetics, though, comes the need for more holistic support for patients, which is such an important element of the hospital’s unique offering. Identifying any mutations through DNA testing is just the first step in the care journey.”
